Description

Paying g homage to the pop punk/emo veering music taste of my teen years, Edgelord Typaoke, as it’s name suggests, is a combination typing and karaoke game that uses song lyrics as an input field.

The song chosen for the project is an extract from Last Resort by Papa Roach. On the input line field, a player can practice/play a self-paced version of the game by simple typing the paragraph. When each word is typed, the respective portion of the song (only the vocals) is sang. To higher the difficulty level, there is an option under the input line that allows the player to have the instrumental backing track of the song playing. This is especially fun for those who know the song as they are challenged to type the words in time to the music. Just as a note, attempting to keep speed with the music has proven quite hard as the words are both case and punctuation sensitive.

As far as the aesthetic is concerned, inspiration was taken from colours and styles used in music videos and content from the genre back in that 2000s time frame. It is meant to embody the stereotypical look of a young teenager from the scene, with a black, poker straight, side swept fringe, and thickly over-lined eyes. The text looks scratchy, as if the same person scribbled these words, that they deemed deep and provoking, onto the back page of a journal while listening to the same song on maximum volume through headphones (an activity I would regularly partake in when I was that age).

Overall this project was aimed at being an exploration into the syntax, language and method of writing HTML5. Recently I have started thinking about developing this into a more cohesive and extensive game experience, by adding more songs and multiplayer competitive functionalities.
