Interference
Processing, Osculator, WiiMotes, Monitors
Using a Wiimote as a rich sensor, the game Interference is a two player game with the aim to keep the ball on the screen bouncing. This is done by controlling the paddle by tilting the Wiimote from left. My main purpose of the project was to create a visually minimalistic game with simple controls that was easy to learn and competitive to play.
While the tilt function is used to move the paddle on screen left and right, it is not the only function of the remote. All the buttons on the Wiimote work and cause some sort of function to occur. While all are not visible to the respective player who pressed the button, it may be causing a beneficial or detrimental effect to the competitor.
In society there is the idea of karma and how the good you do will circle around and come back to you in a positive manner. This concept is used in the button functionality of this game. Usually if you use an attack function, the negative effects of this can clearly be seen on your opponent. In Interference however, you are not only left without the satisfying visual of watching your competitor lose, but can also potentially ruin your own game by attempting to shoot them down. The same principle is used when performing an action that is to benefit you.
Forming a commentary on the world we live in, all of our actions impact something or someone, whether is be positive or negative (just as all the buttons work, whether seen or not). One may work towards their own gain, but this may ultimately help others out more than anticipated. Similarly, when set out to negatively effect others, one may meet the same or worse fate.
